Charles Russell Speechlys advises Thomas Sandgaard on the sale of Charlton Athletic

Charles Russell Speechlys has advised Thomas Sandgaard on the sale of the entire issued share capital of Charlton Athletic Football Company Limited and Charlton Athletic Womens Football Club Limited, which were both acquired by SE7 Partners Limited.

Completion of the sale was conditional on EFL and FA approval, which was received on 19 July with the transaction completing on 21 July. This is the latest of several high-profile acquisitions and disposals that Keir Gordon and the Charles Russell Speechlys Corporate Sport team have completed recently involving English football clubs.

Thomas Sandgaard, former owner of Charlton Athletic Football Club commented: “I am grateful to Keir Gordon and the specialist corporate sport team at Charles Russell Speechlys for their dedicated support in helping to drive this process forward to its conclusion. Their deep knowledge of football M&A combined with pragmatic and commercial advice was a key factor in ensuring we got this deal over the line.”

Keir Gordon, Corporate Partner, commented: “We were delighted to work with Thomas and his team on this transaction at a time when we are seeing significant changes in the football landscape generally. This sale demonstrates the continued strength of football as an asset class and we look forward to seeing both CAFC and CAWFC progress on this next step of their journey.”

The team was led by Corporate Partner Keir Gordon and Tom Smitham (Senior Associate), with support from Ayman Shehata (Associate) and Willemijn Paul (Trainee Solicitor). The wider deal team included Rhys Novak (Partner, Commercial Dispute Resolution), Stephanie Bonnello (Senior Associate, Commercial Dispute Resolution), Daniel McDonagh (Associate, Commercial Dispute Resolution), Robert Birchall (Partner, Corporate Tax) and Ben Butterworth (Associate, Real Estate).
