Ingrid Saffin writes for React News on mixed-use developments

Mixed-use developments represent a strategic approach to urban space utilisation. The concept of constructing residential units above existing stores exploits the “air space”, transforming it into a revenue-generating asset.

In June, John Lewis filed planning applications for projects in London, pledging to build and rent out 10,000 homes above and around Waitrose stores by 2030.

However, these ambitions were brought into question as it was found that only a fifth of homes at the London site would be deemed affordable. This begs the question: will retailers be able to make a success of mixed-use development schemes?

In an article for React News, Ingrid Saffin, Partner covers:

  • What is fuelling the growing appetite for mixed-use developments?
  • What challenges do mixed-use developments present?
  • Are mixed-use developments likely to be a long-term trend?
