Launch of the “1000 companies to inspire Britain 2016” report
We are pleased to endorse today’s launch of the London Stock Exchange’s annual “1000 companies to inspire Britain 2016” report and congratulate all those dynamic businesses included for this year. A number of these are clients of ours with whom we are working closely, guiding them strategically to secure their long-term growth.
The speeches at today’s launch event focused upon how manufacturing is an increasingly important sector in our economy and stressed the support our government shows for SME’s via company and investor tax breaks. The EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) was specifically mentioned as a successful route for entrepreneurial businesses and this is one that we particularly support at Charles Russell Speechlys - we are proud to have been awarded recently with the ‘Best EIS/SEIS Legal or Regulatory adviser’ of the year award by the Enterprise Investment Scheme Association (EISA) for 2015. We are also active partners of the Elite UK training and mentoring platform which facilitates structured engagement between these private growth companies, entrepreneurs and business leaders as well as the corporate advisory and investor community.
We read with interest Xavier Rolet’s article today in the Telegraph, the media sponsor for the report and endorse his comment about debt and how this can be disastrous for the wider economy:
“Historically, as a society, we have been obsessed with using debt to finance companies. Debt is a short-term fix that cannot encourage long-term growth…Instead, we must unleash the power of equity finance, where businesses find investment through crowdfunding, business angels, venture capital or on the public markets - in return for a stake in that business. ”
Andrew Clarke, partner in our Private Equity team, who works closely with our dynamic family business and entrepreneurial clients, said: “The time is so right for these businesses to grow and flourish and this report shows their dramatic growth and contribution to the restoration of our economy in recent years. Guiding entrepreneurs and businesses alike to secure their long-term growth is the most fulfilling part of our role. ”
1000 Companies to Inspire Britain is an annual celebration of some of the fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. As well as identifying 1000 companies, the annual report examines in detail the opportunities and challenges facing SMEs and looks at the sectors and trends that will shape the future of the UK economy. ”
