Charity Commission issues new guidance for trustees
On 10 July 2015, the Charity Commission issued its revised guidance, “The Essential Trustee”, which sets out the key duties of all trustees of charities in England and Wales, and what trustees need to do to carry out these duties competently.
The guidance has been updated with the aim of making it easier to understand and apply. It explains what being a trustee involves, including:
- what trustees do
- who can be a trustee and how trustees are appointed
- trustees legal responsibilities, and
- the specific trustee roles of chair and treasurer.
The Charity Commission expects trustees' to take their responsibilities seriously and suggests that following the good practice specified in the new guidance will help trustees to run charities effectively, avoid difficulties and comply with their legal duties.
