Charles Russell Speechlys continues to build Funds and Investment Management practice

Charles Russell Speechlys today announces the continued expansion of its international Funds and Investment Management team with the appointment of Matthew Griffin.

Matthew will be combining forces with Jeremy Bell, another seasoned funds lawyer who joined the Firm as a Senior Consultant in 2024, to continue to build a high-calibre funds offering alternative to other top firms in the market. Each has decades of experience in senior funds roles.

Matthew joins from Mayer Brown, where he was Head of Funds and Investment Management Europe. Before that, he spent eight years as Partner and Head of Funds and Investment Management (EMEA) at White & Case.

Matthew has more than 25 years’ experience primarily representing mid-market sponsors and institutional investors, including sovereign investors, in a wide range of funds matters. He has acted on a significant number of complex, high-value secondary transactions and co-investment transactions, and has formed funds across asset classes and jurisdictions.

Alongside the existing London, Luxembourg and Asia funds, regulatory and tax practices, US tax practice and private capital transactions practices, the arrival of Matthew – who has particular expertise across London and the Middle East – marks a pivotal step in the development of the Firm’s private capital offering.

David Collins, Partnerwho is responsible for the Firms Business Advisory & Transaction Services Division, which includes the Corporate, Commercial, Banking and Finance, Corporate Tax and Incentives, Financial Services and Funds, Employment and Immigration teams, comments:

Matthew is a heavy hitter in funds and investments, and an exciting addition to the Firm’s senior Funds bench strength. As international private capital continues to grow, our clients increasingly require advice on funds and fund formation, not just in the UK but across all of the world’s major wealth centres. Whether investors or sponsors, these vehicles often form a critical part of their strategies. Matthew’s experience is a perfect fit for us as we continue to strengthen our capabilities.

Matthew Griffin comments:

Charles Russell Speechlys is a rock solid mid-market firm with international presence across jurisdictions I know well, including the Middle East and Asia. The Firm is well-positioned in the world of private capital. Joining Jeremy Bell, a veteran of the funds industry, as well as the Firm’s impressive tax and regulatory practices, including the US tax and Luxembourg teams, means that we have a real opportunity to provide sponsor and investor clients with a calibre funds offering alternative to the dominant funds practices.  I look forward to working with my new colleagues to build a disruptive international funds practice.

Matthew’s appointment follows the sustained growth of the Firm’s funds practice over 2024 and 2025, including Gaven Cheong recently joining as a Partner in Hong Kong.
