Charles Russell Speechlys welcomes highly regarded regulatory and investigations litigator Richard Burger in London

Charles Russell Speechlys today announces the appointment of Partner, Richard Burger, who joins the Firm’s Commercial Dispute Resolution team in the UK. Richard joins the Firm from WilmerHale where he co-headed the London Investigation and Criminal Litigation team. His arrival will further solidify and strengthen Charles Russell Speechlys’ highly ranked investigations offering in a continuously evolving regulatory landscape.

Richard has over 25 years’ experience advising private individuals, large corporations and professional services firms on complex domestic and international regulatory enforcement and associated criminal investigations. As a former investigative lawyer and prosecutor with two of the UK's leading financial regulators: the FSA, the predecessor to the FCA, and the Financial Reporting Council (FRC), Richard’s experience encompasses a broad range of areas including corporate crime, securities enforcement, and compliance within the financial services sector.

He has significant expertise in guiding boards on matters such as stringent regulatory oversight, anti-financial crime measures - particularly those related to bribery - and issues concerning corporate governance. Richard has successfully defended clients under investigation by a wide range of agencies and prosecution authorities including the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), National Crime Agency (NCA), HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and US Department of Justice (DoJ).

Stewart Hey, Partner and Divisional Managing Partner of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution division, comments:

With the ever-increasing rules and regulations shining a spotlight on our clients in all aspects of their business and personal lives, we must continuously strengthen our ability to provide expert advice on regulatory and associated criminal scrutiny. Richard is a particularly exciting addition to our existing highly ranked capabilities across our geographies, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the global team.

Richard Burger, Partner, adds:

One of my strengths is pivoting my practice to meet clients' needs, whether it's managing a board-level crisis, navigating regulatory relationships, or providing compliance and governance advice. At Charles Russell Speechlys, I aim to enhance and support the Firm's offering in regulatory matters—both contentious and advisory— compliance and governance advice, investigations and professional disciplinary defence. I look forward to collaborating with the impressive international litigation team and wider Firm.

Richard’s arrival closely follows the appointment of two Dispute Resolution Partners, Henry Winter and Gavin Margetson, who joined the Firm as Partners within the Commercial Dispute Resolution team last month, both based in the Singapore office.
