Charles Russell Speechlys joins Legal Charter 1.5 as a Dialogue Partner and announces its involvement in a new carbon finance project

Charles Russell Speechlys today announces that is has become a ‘Dialogue Partner’ of Legal Charter 1.5 (“the Charter”) and announces its role in a new carbon finance collaboration with leading NGO Save the Children Global Ventures (“SCGV”) to unlock carbon finance to support communities affected by climate change.

Legal Charter 1.5 is a group of law firms working collaboratively to better understand and address the risks and opportunities – for firms and their clients – of the transition to a low carbon economy. The Firm is one of eight law firms including: Freshfields, Clyde & Co, Slaughter and May, DLA Piper, Taylor Wessing, and Simmons & Simmons.

The Firm also announces its involvement in a new carbon finance collaboration with leading NGO Save the Children Global Ventures, an investment arm of Save the Children UK. SCGV has proposed a model in which member firms fund one or more carbon projects in return for a share of the carbon credits generated. These projects will deliver carbon removal, rather than avoidance (e.g. planting trees, rather than just reducing deforestation), and seek strong social, climate and environmental benefits by design.

It is proposed that initial funding facilitated by the collaboration will be in agroforestry and reforestation in and around the tea-growing areas of the Nandi region in Kenya where child poverty, malnutrition and food insecurity are high, and climate change is impacting farmers.

Kerry Stares, Partner & Director of Responsible Business and Pro Bono, comments:

We are proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative, working with Save the Children Global Ventures and in partnership with other law firms to maximise our impact. Beyond the direct impact of the climate action projects we fund, we hope that this model will inspire and provide a template for more climate finance collaborations, in the legal sector and beyond.
