min readReaz Jafri, Immigration and Private Client Senior Counsel at Charles Russell Speechlys, has been quoted in CNBC on the European Union's move to pressure five Caribbean nations — Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, and St Kitts and Nevis — to end their citizenship-by-investment ("golden passport") programmes by 2028 or lose visa-free access to the Schengen area.
Reaz characterised the EU's request as a starting point for negotiation rather than a firm ultimatum, noting that the debate is far from new. He expects the Caribbean nations to comply, adding that they are “not looking to skirt any rules," and further observed that the appeal of alternative citizenships extends well beyond visa-free EU travel.
