Bloomberg quotes Richard Davies on the Bundesliga's approach to media rights
Bloomberg reports that, since the 2012/13 season, the Premier League’s global revenues have grown to nearly €2.1 billion, a near four-fold increase. The amount far exceeds the combined €1.4 billion made by Spanish, German, Italian and French leagues, with most of it reportedly "coming from broadcast deals".
In this context, Germany's Bundesliga, which expects €218 million from global rights this season, is allegedly making moves to "broaden" its strategy. Last week, it announced deals with media partners in the UK, and it is the first time a top league has granted live rights to content creators in Europe.
While some matches are being shown on Sky and Amazon, the Bundesliga has offered weekly Friday night live matches to Gary Neville's The Overlap and Mark Goldbridge, who is behind That’s Football and Manchester United fan channel The United Stand.
Commenting on the development, Richard Davies, Partner and Head of Sport, is quoted. Richard explains that "the Bundesliga will be hoping that this move will create loyal fans and in the long-term this will translate into revenue".
