iNews quotes Sadie Pitman on Manchester United's new stadium plans and the environmental aspects of major projects

Following the news that a 100,000-seat stadium will be built as a replacement for the Old Trafford stadium, currently owned by Manchester United F.C. (which our Real Estate team commented on here) many industry commentators are now weighing in on the plans and providing their views.

As reported by iNews, some architects have warned that the plans could make a significant dent' in the UK’s carbon budget and create significant carbon emissions.

Within the industry, discussions are also reportedly underway regarding how to prioritise building with timber, straw and other regenerative materials. iNews explains that The sustainable measures Manchester United have put in place are 'therefore essential' if they want to attract investors and sponsors.

Commenting on the theme of sustainability in major projects, Sadie Pitman, Associate in our Planning, Infrastructure and Environment team, provides comments in the article. She explains:

More and more of our clients involved in significant projects actually view the sustainability piece as fundamental, including from a brand and marketing perspective,” explains Sadie Pitman, an associate in the planning team at law firm Charles Russell Speechlys.

"We would expect any investors or funders in the project to not just view a sustainable development strategy as a ‘nice to have’, but a critical factor in deciding whether or not to put up the cash that the club will need to build.
