Maddie Dunn writes for Farmers Guardian on last month’s Spending Review and the Government’s attitude to farming
The recent Spending Review has left British farmers feeling overlooked, as the Chancellor's statement failed to mention Defra or address the challenges facing agriculture, rural communities, and the environment.
The NFU and the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee have criticised Defra's performance, highlighting the need for strategic planning and consultation, especially concerning APR/BPR reforms and the future of the SFI. However, the Spending Review did not address these concerns, instead quietly cutting Defra's budget.
While the policy paper claims commitment to farming and environmental goals, funding details are vague, with promises of increased ELM funding overshadowed by the rapid reduction of subsidy payments. This lack of transparency and engagement threatens to deepen uncertainty in the sector.
In an article for Farmers Guardian, Maddie Dunn, Legal Director in our Private Wealth Disputes team, says the government must prioritise transparency, community engagement, and timely communication to support sustainable farming practices.
Cutting funding sends the wrong message, and backing British farming should be seen as a national necessity.
