The Law Society Gazette and eprivateclient quote Sarah Jane Boon on 'Divorce Day'

Family lawyers have noted a spike in divorce enquiries in early January following the festive period as relationships may be under “increased strain”.

Couples sometimes wish to spend “one last Christmas” together or take advantage of the new year as a fresh start.

This has led to the first working Monday of the year being marked as 'Divorce Day'.

However, to say this is the sole reason for an increase in divorce enquiries is an “oversimplification”, says Sarah Jane Boon, Family Partner. She shares her thoughts with The Law Society Gazette and eprivateclient.

There are many contributing factors to a divorce and approaching the subject of divorce (or even separation) is usually a long and drawn-out process, not one that is decided and acted upon in a matter of days or weeks.

Last year saw the fewest number of divorces take place in England & Wales for over 30 years. Several reasons for this include financial pressures, rising living costs and mortgage rates.
