eprivateclient quotes David Carver on Cristiano Ronaldo’s engagement and considerations around pre/post nups

Though a "celebrated" occasion, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo's engagement to his long-term partner and model Georgina Rodríguez raises important questions for their financial advisers.

With Mr Ronaldo's net worth estimated to be $1 billion and Ms Rodríguez's also approximately $10 million, it is likely both will wish to have a pre-nuptial agreement to protect their assets in the event of a relationship breakdown.

The couple, although recently engaged, have been in a relationship for nine years which could impact the terms of the pre-nup depending on the jurisdiction.

David Carver, Senior Associate in the Family team, comments for eprivateclient:

If the couple were subject to English jurisdiction - which can sometimes apply even if parties live abroad or should they resettle in England in the future - a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement would be one of the most effective ways to clarify their intentions in the event of marital breakdown.

"These agreements can be used to ring-fence assets and override the sharing principle that English courts might otherwise apply to these ‘marital’ assets.
