The Daily Telegraph quotes Kelvin Tanner on wealthy Americans relocating to the UK
The Daily Telegraph reports that many wealthy Americans are choosing to leave the US for a variety of factors, including growing concerns about their wealth, research funding and general uncertainty related to the Trump administration's policies.
The article goes on to claim that "Britain is rolling out the red carpet as America's best and brightest look for a new home" and that than an unintended silver lining is that this may act as a counterbalance to a historic trend - the piece argues: "Britain’s richest and most skilled have been lured to the US by high wages, prestigious institutions and the chance to do business in the world’s biggest economy".
The piece goes on to claim that the UK is among the countries most likely to gain from America’s loss, and presents a serious opportunity to boost the nation's economy.
Later on, the piece warns that another potential difficulty is that even very wealthy Americans may find it challenging to obtain a visa if they are business owners or investors, as opposed to workers.
Kelvin Tanner, Partner in our Immigration team, comments in the article, giving a view on the rising trend and the extent to which our Firm has observed an increase in the number of inidividuals relocating from the US to the UK. Kelvin explains that inquiries from US millionaires and billionaires so far in 2025 have anecdotally doubled compared with previous years.

“We’ve had people that have a high profile and wanted to make sure they were set up in the UK, almost as a kind of insurance policy. We’re seeing a range of backgrounds – people who work in the technology sector, financial services and so on.
