Briefing quotes Aileen Johnson on the use of generative AI within the Knowledge function
In a feature piece on generative AI (genAI), Briefing Magazine explores how the technology is improving and augmenting the Knowledge Management function in law firms.
For the piece, Aileen Johnson, Director of Knowledge, was interviewed for her views on how genAI is impacting Knowledge departments, both at our Firm and throughout the sector. She explains:
The tech piece is huge. Automation and the integration of AI and genAI is a massive change, because we can leverage its efficiency and effectiveness for our clients.
Along with a number of other legal commentators, Aileen goes on to agree that collaboration is likely a result of different functions recognising the value knowledge brings to the table in terms of overarching business growth as well as delivery. "By analysing data, for example, watching evolving trends within different jurisdictions, and getting the pulse of the firm’s operation, lawyers can identify any inefficiencies and other problems, and potential solutions that can boost productivity or unlock new opportunity."
She explains that the Knowledge Management function acts as a trusted advisor - rather than an agenda-setter - to most Firms, providing insight, experience, evidence and information to support strategic decision-making.
Another increasing priority is data collection. Using our proprietary genAI tool Sidekick, Aileen and her team have been analysing how lawyers are using information to identify knowledge hotspots within the organisation, as well as any gaps the function should focus on filling. She continues:
We are a little bit obsessed with data [...] For example, we collect data from our internal and external newsletters to see not only what our lawyers are interested in, but also what they haven’t clicked on, which helps us to identify any knowledge gaps.
