FT Ignites Europe quotes Anne-Marie Balfour on working hours and potential disputes
Samsung announced last month that its senior executives will have to start working a six-day week due to poor company performance.
While the Samsung policy would fall foul of laws limiting working hours in the UK and the EU, employment lawyers say employees at asset management firms have usually voluntarily opted out of these.
Anne-Marie Balfour, Legal Director, speaks to Robert Van Egghen, Senior Reporter at Ignites Europe on the subject.
She says when disputes over working hours do occur, employers and employees are often able to come to agreement as staff working in industries like asset management have usually gone into the sector with the expectation of long hours.
Even when people are always on call, it never really becomes a dispute because [there is] a lot of give and take on both sides.
