Government received 11,500 responses to AI and Copyright Consultation

The Secretaries of State for Science, Innovation and Technology (SIT) and Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) have replied to the joint response of the CMS Committee and the SIT Committee to the Government's consultation on AI and copyright.  We reported on this joint response by the SIT and CMS committees in our thoughts here UK Government’s Consultation on Copyright and AI: What’s Next for AI Developers and Creators?

The response is the latest feedback from the Government on the consultation on AI and Copyright in the UK.  The response states:

  • More than 11,500 interested parties responded to the consultation.
  • No decision has yet been made by the UK Government - it is still reviewing the responses.
  • The Government remains committed to engaging with the creative industries and AI technology industry.
  • Technical working groups are being prepared with key stakeholders to take forward proposals on transparency, technical solutions and standards.
  • The implementation of any text and data mining exception is contingent upon having workable technical solutions in place for rights reservation. The government will not proceed with legislation unless and until these technical requirements are met.

The response is the first formal update on behalf of the Government we have seen since the close of the consultation.  It makes it clear that no decision has yet been taken on AI and Copyright policy. The response does give some indication as to possible next steps, including technical working groups to take forward proposals on transparency, technical solutions and standards.
