About

Tristram provides advice to land owning clients, be they private individuals; trusts; charities; or corporate bodies. By the very nature of a landed estate or farm - being both a private home and a business asset - the range of work that Tristram deals with is broad, covering both day-to-day management advice as well as transactional work. Tristram has experience in handling both Agricultural Holdings Act tenancies and Farm Business Tenancies, whether in respect of the putting new tenancies in place or dealing with matters arising during the life of such tenancies. This includes varying the terms or extent of agricultural lettings to achieve a client’s longer-term ambitions. Landed estate management also takes in other tenancy work, including: leases of sporting rights; equestrian property; commercial property; renewable energy development schemes; and residential property covering both open market lets and employee accommodation. Tristram has experience in handling tenancies of all of these types.

In addition to estate management, Tristram has extensive experience in handling whole estate and whole farm transactions, whether that be buying, selling or refinancing with security over an entire estate. His experience includes acting on some of the larger estate transactions in England and Wales in the last few years.

Tristram is admitted to practise in England and Wales.

Experience

  • Acted on the sale of a c.2,000 acre mixed estate, which included a well-established in-hand farming operation; a shoot; a significant residential property portfolio; and development land. The sale had very tight deadlines which, despite the size of the estate and breadth of information required, we met leading to a very successful outcome for our client
  • Executed a large-scale re-arrangement of existing Agricultural Holdings Act tenancies across an estate as part of a long-term planning strategy. This required careful consideration, due to the number of hidden pitfalls potentially encountered in work of this kind, to meet the client’s aims
  • Assisted in large development project to obtain vacant possession of the land from the existing Agricultural Holdings Act tenant to enable the deal to go through. This required a mix of both following the statutory procedure and adopting a more pragmatic approach to realise the client’s goals
