Robert Thomas

Privacy Officer

Robert is the firm’s Privacy Officer and is responsible for assisting the firm in meeting its data protection obligations under the UK GDPR and other relevant legislation.

About

Until May 2021, Robert was a partner in the employment team specialising in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law, often with an international dimension and with a particular focus on trade union recognition claims and strike action. He is a former barrister and has dealt with almost every type of case in the Employment Tribunal and appeared as advocate on numerous occasions in the County Court, the High Court, the EAT and the Court of Appeal. He has several reported cases and has acted for clients (including many household names) across all sectors.

Since 2017, Robert has acted as the firm’s Privacy Officer, assisting the firm in meeting its obligations under the UK GDPR, the GDPR, the Data Protection Act and other relevant legislation.  He advises on all matters relevant to Data Protection and monitors compliance and data practices internally to ensure the business and its functions comply with the applicable regulatory requirements.  He is responsible for advising on, and, where required, carrying out, staff training, drafting and implementing policies, Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and internal audits.  He also serves as the primary contact for supervisory authorities and individuals whose data is processed by the firm and leads the firm’s response to any data related regulatory investigation or requests for information.  He liaises closely with the firm’s compliance team and is a member of the Risk Committee.

Experience

  • A number of major reorganisations/collective redundancies (involving several hundred employees)
  • A large pension change exercise affecting over 700 employees
  • The successful defence of a whistleblowing and discrimination claim where a costs order of over £300,000 was secured against the claimant
  • Resisting a trade union recognition claim for major employers in the leisure and manufacturing sectors
