About

Jack has more than five years of experience as a qualified solicitor in our Zurich office. He advises internationally mobile individuals and families, as well as trustees and private banks. 

Jack specialises in tax, trusts and succession planning for clients with UK connections. He also has particular expertise on the UK’s reporting regimes (including the Register of Overseas Entities and Trust Registration Service).

Jack has contributed to “Clarke’s Offshore Tax Planning: Foreign Domiciliaries”, authored by his colleagues Dominic Lawrance and Catrin Harrison, and other publications such as International Adviser and eprivateclient.

Jack has a passion for football and has assisted several international clients in the sports sector with their tax and estate planning.

Experience

  • Advising a Premier League footballer on UK Inheritance Tax considerations in the context of a global estate planning exercise 
  • Analysis on the characterisation of civil law structures, such as German and Lichtenstein foundations (Stiftungen), and their UK tax treatment and reporting requirements 
  • Advising on the application of the UK’s various Double Tax Treaties and in particular, those with the US, Switzerland and Germany 
  • Providing pre-arrival planning advice for individuals moving to the UK, including creation of clean capital and tax-efficient investment mandates
  • Analysis of the UK’s complex mixed fund rules and remittance exemptions 
  • Advising on the availability of Business Investment Relief to allow the tax-free remittance of overseas income and gains and obtaining Advance Assurance from HMRC
  • Planning ahead of individuals becoming deemed UK domiciled through the use of protected trusts and offshore life bonds
  • Assisting non-UK trustees with UK-related issues, such as loans connected UK residential property and the taxation of UK resident beneficiaries
  • Advising on the tax and reporting issues for non-UK companies holding UK land, from registration on the UK’s Register of Overseas Entities to the availability of Business Relief for UK Inheritance Tax 
  • Assisting individuals and couples on matters of succession and taxation, particularly in a Swiss/UK context
