CMA fast tracks Ladbrokes/Coral merger to phase 2 investigation

The CMA has referred the proposed merger between Ladbrokes and Coral for an in-depth phase 2 investigation. This follows the parties’ request for a fast track reference. The CMA found in its phase 1 investigation that the transaction meets the test for reference as it gives rise to a realistic prospect of a substantial lessening of competition in relation to the supply of fixed odds betting products in licensed betting offices in a large number of local areas where Ladbrokes and Coral overlap. European Commission approves acquisition of TNT Express by FedEx

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of TNT Express by FedEx Corporation. Both companies offer world-wide small package delivery services. Following an in-depth investigation opened in July 2015, the Commission has concluded that the acquisition will not give rise to competition concerns, because FedEx and TNT are not particularly close competitors and because the merged entity will continue to face sufficient competition from its rivals in all markets concerned.
