European commission to adopt recommendation on online gambling

2 July 2014

On Wednesday 9 July 2014 the European Commission adopts a recommendation to help Member States deliver a high level of protection to their citizens in the area of online gambling services.

The main features of the recommendation are:

  • to ensure that citizens in the EU, especially minors, are aware of the inherent risks associated with gambling
  • that operators are given a set of common principles to abide by in respect of responsible commercial communications of their services
  • to provide greater clarity and assurance for consumers that gambling sites are authorised and have adequate safeguard measures in place to cover issues such as age verification and identification controls
  • to provide appropriate measures to prevent the risks associated with gambling, such as addiction.
