Knowledge Development Lawyer

The Role

The role of the Knowledge Development Lawyer is to support their relevant practice groups’ and the firm’s Knowledge Management (KM) initiatives to enhance the group’s quality of know-how, and its efficiency and profitability in line with its business objectives. The role reports to the Director of Knowledge, Learning and Development, but also works with the KM partners for the practice groups to identify the groups’ KM needs.

This role will assist the Real Estate team 3 days a week on a permanent, job share basis.

The role comprises of, but is not limited to, the following activities:

  • Drafting, reviewing, maintaining and updating precedents, practice notes, checklists, toolkits, clause banks and all other forms of know-how documents required by the practice groups
  • Facilitating the collection of useful know-how from fee-earners in the groups, reviewing this and making it available for sharing around the group (via the KM system  mentioned below and via other appropriate methods for the groups)
  • Working with the Director of Knowledge and the wider Knowledge team to develop and maintain a comprehensive, accessible firm wide KM system, on which all practice group know-how is maintained. The KDL is responsible for structuring, classifying, and maintaining all their practice groups’ know-how on the system and for working with the Director of Knowledge and the Knowledge team to define and improve the infrastructure and functionality of the KM system on an ongoing basis
  • Working with the IS team and the groups’ KM partners to identify the external knowledge resources (legal and business-based) required by the groups
  • Developing with the Director of Knowledge and the group’s KM partners structured and other relevant legal training for all members of the practice group to ensure that they are skilled to the highest levels of competence and practice for their roles. The role may involve delivery of training depending on the requirements of the group
  • Facilitating and leading know-how meetings and other knowledge sharing activities, such as project debriefs, to ensure that key knowledge areas, new developments and the practical knowledge and experience of the group’s fee-earners are shared amongst them
  • Providing practically based, supplemental alerts to the groups, that do not replicate the current awareness alerts available from external resources, but which highlight important developments and the practical implications for fee-earners that flow from them
  • Assisting fee-earners with technical queries and helping them use the firm’s knowledge resources to carry out their own research
  • As agreed with the Director of Knowledge and the KM partner at an appropriate level for the practice groups, assisting with knowledge related BD and other client-facing KM activities
  • Such other KM or L&D related activities that the Director of Knowledge and the practice area requires

Personal Specification

  • Desirably an experienced practitioner in Real Estate with KDL experience and with at least 7 years’ PQE
  • Proven organisational ability within a commercial and pressurised environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Effective, sound decision making and organisational skills
  • Reliability and commitment
  • Team skills
  • Technical expertise in using online research tools and databases
  • Commercial awareness, financial acumen and a business-like approach to legal practice
