Business Development Executive for Business Services Division


The role of the Business Development Executive (“BDE”) is to support the Business Development Manager (“BDM”) in the planning, development and execution of marketing plans and campaigns directed at our core client base and to help in the identification and creation of opportunities to win new business.

The role requires a flexible BDE who will primarily support the Business Services Division. This is the largest Division in the firm and consists of our Corporate (including Capital Markets, Private Equity, M&A), Commercial (including Compliance and Data Protection) and Employment, Pension and Immigration groups.

In addition, this role also supports the co-ordination of some of the key geographical areas of focus, most notably Africa and The Caribbean.

The Team

There are 31 people in the team. The function is divided into three key areas:

  • Business Development
  • Marketing Communications & Events
  • Information Systems (CRM)

The BDE will report directly to the Business Services BDM.

The other key liaison relationships are:

  • Heads of group within the Business Services Division
  • Partners and other fee earners across all offices
  • Secretarial Services Manager
  • Director of Marketing and Business Development
  • Head of Business Development
  • Business Development Executives
  • Other members of the Marketing and Business Development teams in London and internationally – in particular, the events team
  • Members of other Support services (e.g. Finance, Human Resources, Knowledge)

Key Tasks and Responsibilities (this is a broad but not exhaustive list)

Business Development and targeting support

As a ‘go to’ person, providing day to day support to the division, in particular in relation to:

Planning and budgeting

  • working with the BDM and Partners on plans and budgets, as well as leading on the activation of some sub-plans
  • supporting the BDM in the preparation for and participating in relevant marketing & business development meetings and providing updates on activity

Targeting and networking

  • working with the BDM and Partners to develop strategic targeting of new business through the ‘pipeline’ process
  • using Charles Russell Speechlys CRM tool, InterAction, to create, maintain and refine shared   target and other Marketing lists
  • encouraging Partners to track and develop relationships with their contacts capitalising on Charles Russell Speechlys existing networks, e.g. AEL (Association of European Lawyers) and ALFA (American Law Firm Association)

Information capture and reporting 

  • developing, populating and reporting on key information repositories, such as deals databases, pitches, events, digital statistics (website, emailings), PR, new matters, key marketing activity etc.

Training and best practice

  • helping the BDM to organise training for Partners and other fee-earners in the various skills necessary to develop prospects and win new business
  • advising on best practice activities and methods

Pitches/capability statements

  • leading on relevant practice area pitches and working closely with other BDEs to feed in relevant Business Services related expertise in wider go-to-market group pitches
  • attending pitch planning meetings with fee earners
  • undertaking basic research for pitches
  • creating first draft documents and supporting the creation of specific content for pitch and credential documents, both formal and informal, where appropriate
  • creating presentations for beauty parades
  • preparing fee-earners for beauty parades


  • Support on the delivery of specific sector-agnostic campaigns relevant to our sweet-spot clients, working with BDM, Head of Content and Marketing Communications team
Profile raising and marketing communications


  • with the support of the Events Team, supporting on the planning and delivery a variety of targeted events such as seminars, workshops, receptions and other client hospitality

Marketing collateral

  • supporting the BDM in creating brochures, team sheets and other client facing materials

Direct mailings

  • supporting the BDM and working with the relevant fee earners and the Marketing Communications team in creating and organising newsletters, legal updates and other direct mailings (through the marketing database)
  • supporting the BDM on the analysis and reporting on all eCommunications activity, working with the marketing communications and CRM teams

PR/Profile raising

  • supporting the BDM in helping identify and coordinate PR activity
  • supporting on and coordinating all other profile raising (e.g. awards, advertising, sponsorship, memberships, rankings etc.) activity for the group

Directory and award submissions

  • working with the BDM, project managing and coordinating all UK and international directory and award submissions for your sectors and groups


  • supporting the BDM to create and maintain internet and intranet content
  • helping the BDM to gather and report on relevant web analytics
  • working with the BDM and marketing communications team, helping in the delivery of social and other digital media
Project Management

Technical Skills

  • computer literate with a good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • some knowledge of marketing databases (preferably InterAction)
  • excellent communication skills, both written and verbal – the role involves liaison with internal and external people at a senior level and internationally
  • attention to detail
  • organisational ability within a pressurised environment
